Jerome (347 - 420) was a priest, theologian and historian, known as a Doctor of the Church, famed for his translation of the Bible into Latin, the Vulgate. His translation is significant in that, previously, translations of the Old Testament had been based on the Greek Septuagint, which had been the Bible of choice since the early days of the church. He instead went back to the Hebrew scriptures, probably using Origen's Hexapla as a source. He also produced a number of commentaries and historical texts.

Almighty God,
who enlightened your Church
by the teaching of your servant Jerome
enrich it evermore with your heavenly grace
and raise up faithful witnesses
who, by their life and teaching,
may proclaim the truth of your salvation;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.
