Saint Athanasius

Athanasius of Alexandria (c. 293/298 - 2 May 373), bishop of Alexandria, Church Father, noted for his role in the conflict against Arianism during and after the First Council of Nicaea; he is counted as one of the Great Doctors of the Church.

His most famous works are the two-part Against the Heathen and The Incarnation Of The Word Of God, and the classic Life Of St Anthony, which was written following extensive contacts built up over the years with the hermits and monks of Egypt. The latter book was very influential in spreading the ascetic ideal in Eastern and Western Christianity, being translated into several languages.

"He became what we are so that he might make us what he is."

you raised up Saint Athanasius
to be an outstanding defender
of the truth of Christ's divinity.
By his teaching and protection
may we grow in your knowledge and love.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
