Henry Martyn

Henry Martyn (1781-1812) was an Anglican priest and missionary to India and Perisa. Born in Truro, he studied at Cambridge before being ordained priest and becoming a chaplain for the British East India Company. He travelled to India in 1806, where he translated the New Testament into Urdu, Persian and Judaeo-Persic; the Psalms into Persian and the Book of Common Prayer into Urdu. He then began to travel through Persia, before being struck with fever at Tokat, in modern day Turkey, where he died.

Almighty God,
who by your Holy Spirit gave Henry Martyn
a longing to tell the good news of Christ
and skill to translate the Scriptures:
by the same Spirit give us grace to offer you our gifts,
wherever you may lead, at whatever the cost;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
